The Mission of the AWARE Program is to reduce HIV infection among Substance
Users and other individuals indulging in high risk behaviors by teaching skills
that will foster better decision making, increase the level of independence
and promote well being, with the goal of placing persons encountered in a position
to acquire skills and tools to enhance their quality of life.
The goals of the AWARE Program are to educate substance users and interested
parties about the HIV epidemic. In comparison to HIV services delivery areas in Amarillo, Lubbock, and
Midland/Odessa, Amarillo has the largest number of HIV positive individuals
and the virus continues to increase.
AWARE also has a focus on Case Management and Prevention to enhance the
quality of life for substance users. AWARE continues to provide prevention and
education teaching skills to the target population that will lead to better decision-making
about HIV and generalize those same skills to extend to other parts of daily life.
AWARE provide services to 600 individuals monthly.
